Hair perming

How does perming work?

Salons typically offer two main methods for perms: cold perms and digital perms. In a cold perm, your stylist wraps your hair around rollers or rods and applies a chemical perm solution. On the other hand, a digital perm follows a similar process, but the rods are heated to activate the perm and reshape your hair follicles using heat.

The duration of the perm process can vary depending on factors such as the length and thickness of your hair, with the procedure typically taking anywhere from 1 to 2 hours or more to complete.

What hair types can be permed?

Perms aren’t exclusive to straight hair. Individuals with natural waves or curls may choose to enhance their bounce or even out their wave pattern for more manageability. Hair length isn’t a major concern either. As long as your hair is long enough to curl with a curling iron, it's typically suitable for a perm.

However, it's worth noting that perms tend to yield the best results on healthy or virgin hair that hasn't undergone any chemical treatments. If your hair is dry, bleached, or damaged from styling tools, it’s advisable to consult with your stylist before getting a perm.

How long does perming last?

While it's true that once your perm is set, you can't chemically reverse it, you're not committing to a permed hairstyle indefinitely. The longevity of your perm depends on your natural hair pattern and how well you care for your hair. Typically, a modern beach wave perm can last anywhere from 3 to 6 months.

As your hair grows, it will blend in with the permed sections, appearing slightly wavier at the ends. If you want to maintain your curly tresses and avoid a noticeable change in hair texture from root to tip, you can opt for perm root touch-ups. Generally, naturally wavy or curly hair tends to hold the shape of a perm longer than straight hair.

The aftercare of perming

In the days following your perm, it's crucial to allow your hair time to set. To preserve the shape of your new curls, refrain from washing, tying it up, or using additional heat styling for 24 to 48 hours.

Avoid colouring your hair for 7 to 10 days post-perm. Colouring involves opening up the outer layer of the hair follicle, and doing so too soon after a perm can risk over-drying or damaging your hair, or deactivating the perm chemicals.

Additionally, minimise your hair's exposure to water to prolong the life of your perm. Too-frequent shampooing or swimming can diminish the longevity of your curls. When washing your hair, opt for sulfate- and sodium chloride-free shampoo and conditioners designed to protect and strengthen your perm.
